Mooresville is located in Iredell County. The first settlers in what is now Iredell County were Scotch-Irish Presbyterians and German Lutherans from Pennsylvania who came to the area in 1753 for the rich soil, access to fresh water and good hunting. The county was formed in 1788 from a portion of nearby Rowan County and was named for James Iredell, Attorney General of North Carolina during the Revolution and a delegate to the 1788 Constitutional Convention. Cotton drove the economy then the way the racecar industry does now.

Racecar drivers are the county’s royalty and provide jobs and entertainment for Mooresville and surrounding cities. A visit to the North Carolina Auto Racing Hall of Fame shows just how many great race drivers live in the state. Mooresville’s Lakeside Business Park houses many of the area’s racing teams, and visitors are welcome to come into most shops to see cars being readied for the next race. Dale Earnhardt Incorporated houses team memorabilia and has souvenirs for sale. Visit 5 Off 5 On to experience a pit stop as a member of a pit crew. Memory Lane Motorsports & Historic Automotive Museum traces the history of the automobile and of racing. NASCAR Technical Institute is the country’s first technical training school to cover automotive and motorsports technology under the NASCAR name.

Other points of interest in Mooresville include historical buildings such as the Telephone Exchange, (circa 1894) where operators answered and switched calls until 1951. D.E. Turner & Company Hardware has occupied the same building since 1902. On display are hardware items from the 19th and 20th centuries. Other things to experience in Mooresville include Carrigan Farms where you pick your own fruits and vegetables, Depot Visual Arts Center where local and visiting artists display their work, Energy Explorium with interactive games, hikes and tours to teach children about energy sources, the Lazy 5 Ranch with over 600 animals along a 3.5 mile “drive-thru safari” road and Queens Landing where miniature golf and bumper boats coexist with elegant paddle-wheel boats offering dinner cruises.
